Last month, my neighbor Jen got a new Samsung Galaxy phone, having left behind her iPhone. And what was the first thing that she noticed? Not the quality of the camera or the larger screen. It was a pop-up message asking her permission to be tracked on other applications by a particular shopping application. Jen asked me if my iPhone also did the same thing.
That’s basically the whole iOS vs. Android privacy features question, wrapped up in one confused text message. Both phones are trying to protect you these days. They just go about it in pretty different ways, and once you actually switch phones, you notice how different fast.
So here’s what’s actually going on, without the marketing language either company likes to use.
App Permissions: iOS vs Android in Real Life
Every app wants something from you. Camera, location, contacts, whatever. The issue was actually about how much you would be able to say no, and the problem was that it depended totally on your phone.
For the iPhone, the first time an application requests access to something, you will get a popup. Yes, once, yes, always, or no. You can also hand over your rough location instead of your exact address, which sounds like a small feature until your weather app starts knowing which house is yours, which, why does it need that?
Android used to lag behind on this. That’s no longer the case, or perhaps not by much. Later iterations have made it possible to give a single-time access to a camera or microphone, and the app will have to seek access once again on its next run. App permissions on iOS vs. Android was easily an area where Apple could count on victory.
What Is App Tracking Transparency?
Worth slowing down on this one. App Tracking Transparency, or ATT, is Apple’s rule requiring apps to ask before following you across other apps and websites. Before it existed, apps could quietly build a profile of your habits and sell ads off it without you ever knowing.
Now you see something like “Allow this app to track your activity?” Most people tap “Ask App Not to Track,” and for the most part it works. Some companies still try to guess who you are through things like battery level or screen brightness, which is a strange enough workaround that I had to read about it twice to believe it was real. Apple keeps closing those holes as it finds them.
There is no direct alternative for Android OS. The Google alternative is named Privacy Sandbox, and it is being rolled out slower with the intention of limiting the amount of tracking but without destroying ad targeting entirely.
The Android Privacy Dashboard
This is the part where Android actually gets ahead. The privacy dashboard on Android has a timeline of all times in the past 24 hours that the apps accessed your camera, microphone, or your location, and you can click through the timeline to find out which application accessed these things and at what time.
Mine showed me that a flashlight app had accessed my location six times within just one day. A flashlight app. It does not need to know where I live to turn on an LED, and I deleted it almost out of spite. iOS doesn’t have anything quite this transparent yet, and it probably should.
Settings Worth Checking Right Now
A few data tracking privacy settings deserve five minutes of your time today, whichever phone you carry.
On iPhone: Settings, Privacy & Security, and then Tracking. Turn off “Allow Apps to Request to “Track”—the popups stop too, which is nice.
Android’s version: Settings → Privacy → Privacy Dashboard. Worth actually scrolling through and seeing which apps have camera, mic, and location access. Some of them will surprise you. Anything that looks unnecessary, cut it.
End-to-End Encryption in Messaging Apps
iMessage between two iPhones is genuinely end-to-end encrypted, Apple included; they can’t read it either. Text an Android phone from an iPhone, though, and it quietly becomes SMS. No encryption. People don’t realize this is why the bubble color actually matters.
Android’s own Messages app supports encryption now too, but only when both people are using it with chat features turned on. Use a different app on either end, and your protection goes away. But if you want encryption regardless of which phone the other person uses, then Signal acts the same on both, and that’s generally the more secure choice when it comes to private information.
So Which Phone Wins?
It depends on what you’re looking for. Privacy without even changing a setting? The iPhone still has the edge, since Apple built it in from day one. Want to see exactly what your apps are doing and dig in yourself? Android’s dashboard gives you more to work with, assuming you’re willing to check it.
Neither company is doing this out of pure generosity. Both still collect plenty for their own purposes behind the scenes. But set up properly, either phone protects you a lot better than it does straight out of the box.
