To my knowledge, SATA does not have anything like PIO mode. I tried both the onboard sound card AND my Rocketfish PCI sound card. This indicated that the drive had reverted from the usual UDMA (Ultra Direct Memory Access) mode 2 to PIO (Programmed Input Output) mode.
