By faking explorer file, a virus manages to override the normal files, which could dodge automatic removal and thus illegal profit can be gained from account password stealing. Therefore, remove virus that causes explorer.exe error issues manually is highly recommended. Though he's mostly a Windows and gadget guy, he has a fondness for anything tech.
Even it is not a codec pack, check for any software that you might have installed which interferes with windows media player. Deleted the explorer.exe file and restarted. This seems to be a problem with audio driver. Upon restart everything was back to normal. But some Security softwares run even in safe mode. Sometimes, Windows will restart the process automatically after a minute or so, but it's easiest just to go ahead and restart it yourself.
