And that virtual PC can be run on any modern PC from XPSp3 onwards, but will install as good a copy of Win98 as you are likely to need. XP comes with a ton of drivers,so I think your laptop should be fine after installing. (Four years old? What processor speed does it have?

Iv'e got an extra copy of xp and would like to put it on there if possible. And no xp setup disc, no live cd, nothing would boot from the cd except for a dell utility disc my bud came up w/ - which I used to wipe I get a not-bootable device or disc error after it reads. Probably shouldn't have any USB stuff connected, nor PCMCIA cards, but other than that I don't know what to suggest. When someone merely copies that CD for you, unless the copy is made with correct 'clone' options, you won't get the bootable capability. When I use it it wants me to "upgrade" VMWare but I'm wary that it might introduce problems so I'm staying with what's working.
